Umami Mushroom Beef Burger
Ingredients
- 8 oz mushrooms
- 2 T olive oil
- 1 t sea salt, divided
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 t garlic powder
- 1 t Italian seasoning
- 1 t paprika
- ½ t black pepper
- ½ t onion powder
- 1 large egg
- ¼ c breadcrumbs
- Oil for cooking
- 4 hamburger buns
Directions
- Clean mushrooms and chop them very finely.
- Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil. Once the oil is hot, add the mushrooms to the skillet and season with ½ teaspoon salt. Cook until the mushrooms are soft and most of the moisture has cooked off, about 3–5 minutes. Pull off the heat and let them cool slightly.
- Once the mushrooms have had a chance to cool a bit, toss them in a large bowl along with the beef, remaining salt, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, paprika, pepper, onion powder, egg, and breadcrumbs.
- Using clean hands or a spoon, mix until well combined and the ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the meat.
- Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions and form into patties that are 1-inch thick.
- If you want to grill these burgers, use your thumbs to create a small indentation in the top of the burger to prevent them from puffing up too much while cooking.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add cooking oil. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the burgers in the pan and cook for about 5 minutes on each side and until your preferred doneness.
- If grilling, cook burgers on a medium-high grill for about 5 minutes per side.
- Serve on buns and top with your favorite burger toppings.
